SUMMARY:Paint-a-(Dartmoor)-Pony Competition
DESCRIPTION:Capture the spirit of Dartmoor through its rapidly disappearing native ponies. \n\n\n\nFor £25 you’ll receive an MDF pony cut-out to paint or decorate however you wish. The brief is deliberately broad: your cut-out is a canvas for the spirit of Dartmoor in all its forms. That might mean a beautifully observed portrait of a Dartmoor pony\, or it might mean tors and stone rows\, rocky streams\, thatched cottages\, folk tales\, the wide moorland sky – anything that speaks to what Dartmoor is. Realistic\, abstract\, whimsical\, illustrative: all approaches are welcome. \n\n\n\nOne entry per person. \n\n\n\nThe shape of the MDF cut-out you will use\n\n\n\nHow to enter \n\n\n\nCut-outs are available from Salar Gallery during the Festival and throughout July\, and from the Festival stall at the Saturday Street Market (11th July) for £25. \n\n\n\nPainted or decorated cut-outs should be returned to Salar Gallery by Monday 1st September. Judging takes place later in September\, after which entries will be auctioned to raise funds for the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust and Hatherleigh Festival. \n\n\n\nPrizes \n\n\n\n\n1st: £100\n\n\n\n2nd: £50\n\n\n\n3rd: £25\n\n\n\nSpecial prize for best entry by an artist aged 16 or under\n\n\n\n\nKindly sponsored by Sonia Lindsay and Sally Vick. \n\n\n\nAbout DPHT \n\n\n\nThe Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust is a charity working to ensure these ponies\, which have roamed the moor for centuries\, still have a future. They are part of Dartmoor’s history\, heritage and identity\, and a living symbol of the National Park – which this year celebrates its 75th anniversary.

SUMMARY:From Stone to Paint: A Day with Earth Pigments
DESCRIPTION:(With a lunch break – please bring your own lunch. Coffee\, tea and biscuits provided.)Group size: 12 \n\n\n\nThis one-day workshop\, led by Jessica Lennan\, is an introduction to working with earth pigments and making colour from the landscape. \n\n\n\nWe’ll begin the morning indoors\, looking at what earth pigments are and how to recognise and test for them. Then we’ll head out for a walk around Hatherleigh Moor Brook to see what we can find. \n\n\n\nIn the afternoon\, we’ll spend time grinding stones into pigment and turning that into watercolour paint. It’s a slow\, hands-on process. By the end of the day\, you’ll leave with your own handmade watercolour paint from the place itself. \n\n\n\nAll tools and paper are provided. You’re very welcome to bring a sketchbook or your own paper as well.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Jessica Lennan \n\n\n\nJessica Lennan is a photographer and artist based on the edge of Dartmoor. Her work explores place and material processes\, often combining photography with pigments made from stones collected on site. She is interested in slow\, tactile ways of understanding place and in the relationship between image and material. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue

SUMMARY:The Charter of the Forest and our lost Commons Rights
DESCRIPTION:Talk by Myc Riggulsford: The Charter of the Forest and our lost Commons Rights\n\n\n\nYour electricity bill may be illegal\, and you can dig up clay\, feed pigs\, or build your own house\, according to this fast paced and fun journey through 800 years of Devon history which shows that we may have lost or forgotten rights which entitle us all to a basic and sustainable living from our countryside. And it’s all thanks to revolting Devon commoners. \n\n\n\nMagna Carta’s first part\, the Charter of Liberties agreed at Runnymede\, protected our new ruling class\, the Norman barons\, from being taxed and imprisoned in 1215.  But a second law passed two years later\, the Charter of the Forest\, returned to ordinary people in Britain rights such as keeping ponies and sheep\, or collecting firewood on Dartmoor and Exmoor which are still used by villagers today with ancient links\, but which may mean that we should all share this country’s natural wealth. \n\n\n\nBy knowing more about our lost rights\, we can protect our common assets such as ancient woodlands\, and make sure that young people have opportunities to explore alternative and more sustainable ways of living.  The fascinating knowledge we have lost includes smallholding skills such as pannage\, estovers\, agistment and other archaic practices from the days before plastic. \n\n\n\nJoin science and environment journalist Myc Riggulsford for a bit of history\, comedy\, and some radical thinking in a thought provoking debate about Devon’s past\, the 800 year old rights we have forgotten or allowed to lapse\, and how they could help our society today. \n\n\n\n\n\nMyc Riggulsford\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue

SUMMARY:Spork! And the return of the Poetic Hunts!
DESCRIPTION:Join Edward Tripp and Chris White for another big Poetic Hunt! A second serving of silly and subversive comedy\, poetry\, live music and filth. \n\n\n\nThis event will feature a guest spot from musical comedian Mimi\, an Audience Limerick competition\, a “community poem” created by you. Yes\, you. Some surprising proclamations from Roz the town crier\, a panda in a headlock\, and a few references to Noel Edmunds. This is poetry for people who don’t like poetry. And comedy for people who aren’t too discerning \n\n\n\nEdward Tripp is an award-winning Irish stand-up poet\, with a penchant for the surreal. He’s performed up and down the UK\, from Just the Tonic in Edinburgh to the London Museum of Comedy. Whether screaming about spatulas or soliloquising about Uncle Connor “who isn’t in the IRA\,” Ed’s a prop-heavy and provocative performer. “A roaring fire of absurd wit” – Corr Blimey \n\n\n\nChris White is a performer\, poet and the soggiest bottom in all Exeter. The founder of Spork! Poetry\, a multiple slam winner\, and the first Riddler in Residence at Exeter Cathedral. He’s performed all over from Shambala to Tongue Fu\, as well as on buses and boats. Writing silly words about queerness\, identity and ducks. “A knack for humour that can make you sigh in embarrassment\, while also crying with laughter.” – Bristol 24/7 \n\n\n\nPlus Mimi! Cornwall Comedian of the Year 2022\, Mimi is a high energy performer\, super scatty and armed with a ukulele to accompany her sweet but sour observations. A regular host of Beasts of Bodmin\, and (who could forget) the winner of the “Worst Poet Wins” competition at Exeter Comedy Festival 2025.  \n\n\n\nGet involved in the Limerick Slam by writing an original limerick ahead of the night and reading it onstage. The best 2 limerick writers will then have around 30mins to write a new limerick on the spot. The winner will receive a box of broken biscuits.  \n\n\n\nPlease note: This event is rec 14+ because of some adult content & language \n\n\n\nPLUS\n\n\n\nFancy Curry\, Comedy and a Pint? \n\n\n\nWe’ve teamed up with The Tally to do all of this for £17.95 \n\n\n\nOr even better £15.95 if you have a festival wristband!
