  • Book Club – ‘Turning of The Tide’ by Liz Shakespeare

Posted on May 1, 2013 by Hatherleigh Festival in 2013, Events, Thursday, Workshop No Comments
Book Club – ‘Turning of The Tide’ by Liz Shakespeare

    Cost – Donations Requested
Book Title – Turning of The Tide
    Author – Liz Shakespeare
    Venue – The George Hotel
    Time – 3.30pm till 5.30pm

TTOTT SeaLiz is going to start the session by giving a talk about her research and writing of her book “Turning of the Tide” and then take questions.

    Her Blurb about the Book

    Devon, 1871

Young and vulnerable Selina Burman from Clovelly and her two young children are confined in the harsh environment of Bideford Workhouse. She can only observe them from a distance and despairs of a better future. Her prospects improve when she meets Dr Ackland, a popular G.P. committed to social change. He employs her as a servant in his own household, despite the doubts of his wife and the Bideford community, for whom any connection with the Workhouse is a source of fear and shame. Selina’s work gives satisfaction, but her search for love and security does not conform to the expectations of a middle class Victorian family and threatens to damage both her own future and Dr Ackland’s career.

Set in Bideford and Clovelly, this novel draws on newspaper articles, letters and census returns, and powerfully brings to life the factual origins of the story.

‘The Turning of the Tide by Liz Shakespeare is an immensely engaging story that captures the reader from the first page.’

    Historical Novel Review

‘A clever combination of fact and fiction, this book both illuminates and entertains – an extremely gripping read.’

    Family History Monthly

Liz Shakespeare understands the period commencing in 1871 perfectly well, describing the deprivation of the Union Workhouse as though she had suffered it herself.’

    Devon Family Historian

Liz Shakespeare is the author of

Fever: A Story from a Devon Churchyard
The Memory Be Green: An Oral History of a Devon Village
    and
    All Around The Year (forthcoming.)

From Source to Sea – Create a giant communal painting

    Facilitated by Devon Artists Network

    Cost – Free
    Venue – Old Schools
    Age Group – Family
    Time – All Day

Join Naomi Hart to help create a giant communal painting based on the Lew and Torridge Rivers, from source to sea, highlighting their ecology and wildlife.

This can include settlements, towns, water, rocks, the river banks, plants, fish, animals found by the water (represented as animals or by their tracks in the mud), roundhouses, stone rows, cairns, burial mounds and rituals and the finished painting will represent a cultural and ecological ‘map’ of the rivers and their surroundings.

The workshop can be loosely structured with people ‘dropping-in’ to paint a small section.  As the canvas will be large, around 5metres long by 1.5m wide, several people can work on it all at the same time – up to 20 at a time.

As the painting skills needed are basic, all ages can join in and either work on one bit together or separate parts of the river.  There will be visual material available for people to respond to if they don’t know the river well.

The public/participants will learn about mixing paint colours, mark making, teamwork and about different ways to represent things in the real world. They will also learn about the geography, geology, history and ecology of the area and see how people and the river fit into the environment.

    Her Blurb

Cloudi-Lewis“Indie/Folk newcomer Cloudi Lewis describes herself as ‘A young singer song writer’” – a big understatement as this girl, with her beautiful mess of red hair and shy disposition, has a captivating air and show-stopping voice that can reduce a noisy audience to utter silence! With her emotive lyrics it is evident her music has been inspired by the likes of Laura Marling and Ben Howard. Last year Cloudi and her band had the chance to support Trevor Horns band ‘The Producers’, and went on frequently gigging through the summer at festivals such as ‘Sidmouth Folk festival’. She was also lucky enough to record vocals at ‘Abbey Road Studios. Later in the year she supported the amazing ‘Rachel Sermanni’ on her tour. Cloudi ran a successful kickstarter campaign which funded her debut EP ‘Casual Conversations With a Woodpigeon’ which is available on iTunes’.
